Would You Survive?

The following speech by Iras Absalon, founder of the city of Eudaimon, was found among the examiner's personal papers.

Humanity has almost wiped itself off of the face of the earth. We have destroyed ourselves through divisiveness and prejudice, greed and war, shortsightedness and ignorance. We have prized the immediate moment and the rights of the individual over the future of our world. And look what that has brought us: a world decimated, torn apart by wars and disease, plagued by drought and famine and dust.

But for the farsightedness of myself, and of my wise friends and partners Adrian and Silas here, we might very well be witnessing the final hours of mankind. But we have long seen this day coming, as have our fathers before us, and we have prepared a way: four cities — upon a hill as it were — designed and prepared to shelter the remnants of humanity from sun and famine, death and drought, disease and disaster. These cities now stand ready, tall and proud, waiting with open arms.

But make no mistake, we will not tolerate the evils of these prior days happening again. We will not blindly follow the same path, naively expecting it to lead us to a different destination. We will, we must, stamp out all the misguided practices and antiquated beliefs that have guided us unchecked to the very brink of destruction.

Take, for example, this document here. These lines proudly proclaim a very old premise: that all men are created equal. Well, they were fine words for creating a primitive nation, for winning a primitive war, but they are not the kind of words that will save us from total annihilation. Because no matter how beautiful those words sound, no matter how much we wish for them to be true, they are, in fact, false. Reality teaches us this, as we observe the world around us. Some men look only to their own selfish gain. Other men are visionaries, capable of accounting for the broader aspects of humanity in their decisions. Some men have led us into war and utter destruction when left unchecked — mad men, driven by the demons of power, bigotry, and extremism in all of its ugly forms. Other men have ruled with power checked by wisdom and grace. Some men will draw us back into the dark ages with primitive practices and beliefs. Other men will carve a new way forward for humanity. So we see, that some men are more equal, more deserving of equality than others, who would threaten our entire existence.

And so, for that very sake — the continued survival of our species on this planet — we must appear to harden our hearts, to sacrifice the few to save the many. For it is our duty to only allow into these our last refuges the kind of people who will aid our great new experiment in survival. The ones who look to the furtherance of humanity, free of dangerous beliefs and archaic practices. The ones who will guide us to a brighter, better, more rationally organized and fairer future.

For mark my words, my friends, this is the last chance that we have, and we must not hesitate to do everything we can to ensure its success. This may seem radical, but I assure you it is not. In a way, life on this earth has always been this simple. We adapt, or we die.

Fear not! The screening process is streamlined and for most, it has already been completed. If your desires are true, you will be admitted. I look forward to remaking our world together.
