Chosen at a young age to be a balance keeper, Quincy chafes against the oppressive religious system of the anchorage. In a world where unorthodoxy is punished with death, she lives an elaborate charade, with one very simple rule: avoid the truth at all costs. When she accidentally discovers a way to communicate with the prisoner beneath her chamber, Quincy learns of a mysterious savior who has come to the prisoner's rescue before. Escape could finally be within her grasp.
If only it were that easy. The prisoner is more interested in babbling about her strange new religion than formulating escape plans. Convincing her best friend Monroe to leave might be impossible — she believes that the anchorage is the only way to atone for her sins, no matter how cruelly she is treated. And a powerful visitor has arrived at the anchorage, with authority over their very lives and plans of his own for their world — and Quincy.
As the pressure builds on all sides, Quincy's lies might just be about to catch up with her.
It was a tiny chance. It was playing with fire in a barrel of kerosene and she knew it.
